Dr. Wheatley Stewart

Dr. Wheatley Stewart Bio

Dr. Wheatley Stewart
1920 - 1998

Dr. Wheatley Stewart was the first African-American physician to practice at Medical Center Hospital.     Dr. Stewart came to Odessa in 1948 and started seeing patients at MCH soon after the facility opened in November 1949.  He was named Chief-of-Staff of MCH in 1967.  Dr. Stewart also served on the Ector County Hospital Board of Managers from November 1975 until October 1977, and served as Board Chairman from January 1976 until January 1977.  Dr. Stewart resigned from the Active Medical Staff at MCH in 1996 and was appointed to the Honorary Staff in August 1996.  He retired from his medical practice in 1997 and passed away in January 1998.

It is with great respect and appreciation that Medical Center Hospital dedicates this facility to the memory of Dr. Wheatley Stewart for his many contributions to the Odessa community.  Thank you to his family for allowing us to honor him for his many decades of service.
