Wheatley Stewart

Dr.
Wheatley Stewart was the first African-American physician to practice at
Medical Center Hospital. Dr. Stewart came to Odessa in 1948 and
started seeing patients at MCH soon after the facility opened in
November 1949. He was named Chief-of-Staff of MCH in 1967. Dr. Stewart
also served on the Ector County Hospital Board of Managers from November
1975 until October 1977, and served as Board Chairman from January 1976
until January 1977. Dr. Stewart resigned from the Active Medical Staff
at MCH in 1996 and was appointed to the Honorary Staff in August 1996.
He retired from his medical practice in 1997 and passed away in January
1998.
