The Nursing Professional Practice Council (NPPC) is an organization of professional nurses within the MCH facility who represent the various units and specialty areas.  The NPPC is a self-governance model for MCH nurses.  Representatives of the Council meet at least once a month and make decisions regarding the practice of nursing pertaining to the patient, the nurse and the facility.  The Council is further comprised of more specifically defined sub-councils that consider issues that match their defined parameters.  Those sub-councils are the Education Council, Clinical Practice Council, Performance Improvement Council, and the Professional Development and Leadership Council.  Every member of the NPPC is assigned to one of these sub-councils and each sub-council reports to the NPPC.

Examples of issues that have been considered by the NPPC include such matters as the appropriate rider for blood administration and how it can be sequestered from other solutions; IV tubing use for piggyback meds; floating of new nurse orientees; and the use of skin care products.

Specific issues are brought to the NPPC via what is known as the “Opportunity Form”, which is available to all MCH nurses.  Anyone who is interested in submitting an Opportunity Form is encouraged to actively participate in the process of bringing the issue to the NPPC by either submitting their own ideas, presenting to the council and/or performing research in the area of the issue.  Any nurse employed by MCH is welcome to submit an Opportunity Form if they recognize issues that need to be addressed by the MCH nursing community.
